Read, Write, Talk, Sing and Play Every Day

Read, Write, Talk, Sing and Play Every Day

By Jane Girondo, FCPL Early Literacy Assistant

Reading, writing, talking, singing and playing are activities that you do with your young children every day. Why not include some early literacy skills while interacting with your children? Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) is here to help you with a series of posters that pairs a picture book with activities to do with children that can help build their early literacy skills.

Want a sneak peek? Check out the activities paired with Llama, Llama, Hide and Seek by Anna Dewdney, the perfect poster for cold wintry days.

  • Draw pictures of the places Llama Llama looks for fuzzy llama. Using lines to copy pictures helps children develop muscles for writing.
  • Talk about the places Llama Llama looked for fuzzy llama. What else was in the toy box and the drawer?
  • Sing a silly song about fuzzy llama “Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Llama Gone.” Make up things to sing about in the song.
  • Hide a favorite toy. Crawl around like Llama Llama, opening drawers and doors, as you look for it.
