On July 30, people across the world celebrate the bonds formed between each other as a part of International Day of Friendship. Designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011, the day serves as a reminder that “friendship between peoples, countries, cultures, and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.”

This International Day of Friendship, make time to connect with friends who bring you immeasurable joy and happiness. And what better way to connect with friends than by bonding over a good read? Check out these books about friendship to share with your closest pals:

  • Friendship: The Evolution, Biology, and Extraordinary Power of Life's Fundamental Bond by Lydia Denworth
Denworth weaves together past and present, field biology and cutting-edge neuroscience, to show how our bodies and minds are designed to make friends, the process by which social bonds develop, and how a drive for friendship underpins human (and nonhuman) society.

  • Happiness by Aminatta Forna
A fox makes its way across London's Waterloo Bridge. The distraction causes two pedestrians to collide. In this tale of love and loss, of cruelty and kindness, Forna asks us to consider the interconnectedness of lives, our coexistence with one another and all living creatures, and the true nature of happiness.

  • Big Friendship: How We Keep Each Other Close by Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman
Two of the nation's leading feminists and hosts of the hit podcast "Call Your Girlfriend" make the bold and compelling argument that a close friendship is the most influential and important relationship a human life can contain.

  • The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett by Annie Lyons
Eudora Honeysett has lived a full life and witnessed the indignities and suffering of old age. At 85, her end will be on her terms. Then she meets 10-year-old Rose Trewidney and Eudora finds herself embarking on a series of adventures, reminding her of her own childhood and making her realize that she must come to terms with what lies ahead.

  • Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson
Torn between the fantasies of her youth and the realities of a life marked by violence and abandonment, August reunites with a beloved old friend who challenges her to reconcile her past and come to terms with the difficulties that forced her to grow up too quickly.

  • Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
In 1943, a British fighter plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France. The survivor tells her captors a tale of friendship, war, espionage and great courage as she tries to survive while keeping all that she can a secret.

  • The Art of Showing Up: How to Be There for Yourself and Your People by Rachel Wilkerson Miller
How to form and maintain genuine friendships in an age of social disconnect.
