Fort Belvoir is holding the first of several public information meetings and inviting public feedback on future efforts to decommission and dismantle the deactivated SM-1 former nuclear power plant at Fort Belvoir. On March 12, the project team will host an information session at the South County Government Center for anyone interested in providing feedback and learning more about the project. The session will consist of two open houses for the public to meet and interact with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Fort Belvoir personnel working on the project. Formal presentations will follow each of the open houses to share the SM-1’s history and ongoing decommissioning planning, with a subsequent question and answer session. The deactivated SM-1 former nuclear power plant on Fort Belvoir has been deactivated since the early 1970s. Project is anticipated to be complete in 2025.
Schedule:
6:30pm: Open House period where the public can meet and interact with USACE and Fort Belvoir personnel working on the project
7:00pm: Formal presentation about the SM-1's history and ongoing decommissioning planning and a subsequent question and answer session
7:30pm: Another open house period
8:00pm: A second iteration of the formal presentation for those wishing to attend later in the evening
8:30pm: A final open house period for questions and answers
