~Project located in Hunter Mill and Providence Districts~
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. – The population is anticipated to increase in Fairfax County, particularly in the northern region, which means the need is becoming greater to ensure the wastewater system can accommodate that growth. The multi-pronged Tysons Wastewater Conveyance Systems Modifications Project (Tysons West) is being proactively designed to increase the size of the sewer system to better facilitate the process of collecting and treating the additional wastewater.
After several years of planning, the county is preparing to celebrate next week the start of construction on the Tysons West Pump Station in Vienna. The new 25 million gallons per day (MGD) pump station will replace the existing 1.0 MGD pump station at the same location, in both the Hunter Mill and Providence Districts.
Groundbreaking Event
- Date: Wednesday, November 20
- Time: 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Location: 8608 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, VA 22182
The pump station is the first of the three related transmission infrastructure designs to move wastewater to the Noman Cole Pollution Control Plan in Lorton. The other two projects, a gravity sewer pipeline and a pressurized pipeline, will begin in fall 2025. Collectively the project will decrease the risk of wastewater overflows and back-ups during periods of high wastewater flows.
The $110 million cost of the Tysons Wastewater Conveyance Systems Modifications Project is being funded through existing customers one-time sewer service charges for initial connection to the system. No tax dollars are being used.
Businesses and residents near the pump station will receive periodic construction updates, as well as information on any potential impacts that may occur.
