Fairfax County Recognizes 13 Employers as “Best Workplaces for Commuters”

February 8, 2024

The Fairfax County Board of supervisors recognized 13 employers who have taken steps to encourage environmentally-friendly commuter practices, reduce traffic congestion and preserve the region’s air quality at its meeting on Feb. 6, 2024, by recognizing them as a “Best Workplace for Commuters” (BWC). Honorees included:

  • Agile Defense, an IT federal contractor based in Reston (Hunter Mill District) who offers remote work opportunities, flexible work schedules, commuter transit benefits and an electric display board with transit information.
  • BXP (Boston Properties, which manages Reston Town Center (Hunter Mill District), was recognized as a “Best Site for Commuters” as it not only serves business and retail tenants, but also 2,000 residential homes. The campus offers a complimentary shuttle to access Metrorail and Connector bus service, Capital Bikeshare stations and more than 26 EV charging stations.
  • CargoSense, a supply chain operations development firm in Reston (Hunter Mill District) has a “remote first” telework policy and has enrolled in the SmartBenefits Plu$50 commuter benefits program for their 25 employees.
  • Freddie Mac, the mortgage supplier headquartered in Tysons (Providence District), provides Metro shuttles to two nearby Metro stations, and encourages carpools and vanpools with a rideshare subsidy.
  • GDIT (General Dynamics Information Technology), an IT consulting firm in Falls Church (Mason District), offers a “full flex” workweek, allowing its 1,100 employees to work whenever and wherever is best to complete their work. The company also provides a shuttle to and from the Metro, outdoor work spaces and walking trails.
  • Gorove Slade, a transportation planning and engineering firm in Fairfax (Springfield District), has a fully hybrid workforce, and provides Capital Bikeshare memberships and pre-tax commuter benefits to its 45 employees.
  • GuidePoint Security, a Herndon-based cybersecurity firm (Dranesville District), has emphasized remote work since its founding in 2011, and offers flexible work schedules for its 800 employees.
  • INADEV, an IT company in Tysons (Providence District) offers hybrid work schedules, a shuttle to and from Metro, on-site fitness center and EV charging stations for its 100 employees.
  • Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, located in Fairfax (Sully District), offers pre-tax commuter benefits, onsite daycare and close proximity to Metrorail and Fairfax Connector for its 500 employees.
  • Inova Springfield Healthplex has a pre-tax commuter benefits program, a variety of transit options, including Metrorail, VRE and Fairfax Connector, and showers and lockers for its 300 employees (Franconia District).
  • Jones Robb, an intellectual property law firm in Tysons Providence District), offers pre-tax commuter benefits, remote work policies, EV charging stations, and Uber to metro and restaurants.
  • Kajeet, a McLean-based IT firm that supports the EV charging industry (Providence District), offers flexible and remote work options for its 200 employees, along with a fitness center, bike storge, an electronic transit display board, complimentary Uber for Business shuttle, and of course, EV charging stations.
  • Maximus, the health and human services provider in Tysons (Providence District), offers a fully hybrid model for its 1,000 employees, with pre-tax commuter benefits, EV charging stations, Capital Bikeshare access, and a complimentary shuttle to the Tysons Corner Metro station.

“For the last 13 years, Fairfax County has recognized organizations working to reduce congestion and pollution in Northern Virginia – while attracting and retaining top talent – through the Best Workplaces for Commuters program,” said Marcus Moore, FCDOT Transportation Demand Management (TDM) liaison. “The Fairfax County Commuter Services (FCCS) staff works year round with employers to help build commuter programs that fit the needs of our local workforce, while also creating a blueprint for local and national recognition.”

The Best Workplaces for Commuters program is a national recognition founded by the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at the University of South Florida. Philip Winters, TDM program director from CUTR, introduced this year’s honorees and spoke to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors about current commuting trends. “Nearly one-quarter of workers have left a job due to a bad commute, according to research from staffing firm Robert Half,” said Winters, emphasizing the importance of Fairfax’s leadership in bringing Best Workplaces for Commuters recognition to area employers.

Currently, there are more than 700 employers across the country who have achieved a Best Workplaces, Best Sites or Best Universities/Colleges for Commuters designation, with nearly 150 coming from Fairfax County.
