Transportation Alert:
On March 20, 2018, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the Embark Richmond Highway Comprehensive Plan. There also were 11 follow-on motions, one of which directed Fairfax County staff to develop a funding plan for the recommended transportation infrastructure improvements.
Since then, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation has developed a list of dozens of recommended projects and conceptual designs in the Richmond Highway corridor. These recommendations come from the Comprehensive Plan Area Plans, Bicycle Master Plan and Countywide Trails Plan.
Community Business Center (CBC) sidewalk projects would add missing sidewalk connections for residents to walk to planned Bus Rapid Transit stations and existing shopping centers:
Grid of Streets projects would build enhanced streetscapes within the designated CBC’s as envisioned in the Mount Vernon Area Plan. These grids are anticipated to be built mostly through private development, but 25% of the total grid costs are included in the funding plan in case small parts need to be built by Fairfax County as capital projects.
There are also two dozen standalone projects in the corridor under consideration.
Four projects have two design concept alternatives, which would have greater and fewer right-of-way requirements. Option B alternatives for Quander Road, Southgate Drive, and Memorial Street could be completed within the existing roadway and do not have associated concept plans. Option B for Arlington Drive would require some additional right-of-way, but less than Option A. The final decision about which concept to build will be made during the design phase, with community input.
