Vaden Drive Bridge Closure Over I-66 Begins Oct. 18, 2019; Fairfax Connector, Pedestrian and Vehicular Traffic Impacts and Detours Explained

For Immediate Release
October 11, 2019
#C22_19

Due to construction on I-66 as part of Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project, the Vaden Drive bridge over I-66 will be closed from on or around October 18, 2019, and will remain closed until summer 2020. This closure will allow for bridge reconstruction and addition of an express lanes ramps to and from the west. A new Vaden Drive bridge is needed to accommodate the future, wider I-66, and will provide dedicated express lanes access to and from the west for buses and cars only. Improvements will also be made to the intersection of Saintsbury Dr. and Nutley Street to accommodate anticipated additional traffic at that intersection while the detour is in place.

Fairfax Connector Service Detour Information

Due to the bridge closure, Fairfax Connector Routes 621, 622, 623, 624, 630, 631, 632, 634, 640, 641, 642, 644, 650, 651, 652, 698  will detour to exit the Vienna Metrorail Station. To minimize delays to bus service, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has provided financial support to Fairfax Connector for extra capacity, if needed, to ensure continued operations during this phase of the I-66 project.

Pedestrian and Vehicular Traffic Detour Information

Fairfax Connector passengers and other travelers should also be aware of the following impacts on pedestrian and vehicular traffic (see map):

  • Pedestrians should cross I-66 by using the Vienna Metrorail Station pedestrian bridge. Follow signage to reach the bridge, then return to Vaden Drive.
  • Vehicular traffic will be detoured to Nutley Street to access I-66 East and I-66 West, and to reach points on the other side of I-66.
  • Existing access to the Vienna Metrorail Station parking garages to the north and south of I-66 will remain open, as will the ramp from I-66 West to Country Creek Road.
