Free Student Bus Pass + Metrobus 

UPDATE: Attention Student Bus Pass Plus Metrobus Users! New zero-tolerance policy (Spanish version).

NEW: Fairfax County's Free Student Bus Pass + Metrobus program has expanded to include a total of five schools. Joining Justice High School: Annandale High School, Falls Church High School, George C. Marshall High School and Davis Center. Students who attend these schools can ride Metrobus for FREE in Northern Virginia, along with Fairfax Connector and City of Fairfax CUE. When you sign up for the pass, you'll receive a specially designed and programmed Smart Trip card. Interested? Get started by completing the application with permission from a parent/guardian. Then turn in the form to your school's administration office and you're good to go! The application is also available in Spanish, Urdu, Vietnamese, Korean, Arabic and Chinese. To request a copy in one of these languages, email Saul.CiezaMejia@fairfaxcounty.gov

Watch: Zero-tolerance rules of having a Student Bus Pass Plus Metrobus card. 

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Student Pass SmarTrip card can ONLY be used on Fairfax Connector, City of Fairfax CUE and specific Northern Virginia Metrobus routes listed in the table below.
  • When you board the bus simply tap the card on the farebox and GO! Even though it's free, make sure to always use your card to get on the bus.
  • If you wish to use Metrorail or any other transit system that accepts SmarTrip you will need a standard SmarTrip card.
  • Full terms and conditions.

Keep in mind, the card:

  • Cannot be used on Metrorail or any Metrobus route outside of Virginia (ABSOLUTELY NO USE in DC or Maryland) If you attempt to use the card on a non-approved route outside of Northern Virginia your card will be deactivated, and you will not be issued a new one.
  • Does not carry any cash value. You can’t add money to it like a regular SmarTrip card.
  • Works between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 10 p.m.

  • For City of Fairfax CUE route and schedule information, go to https://www.fairfaxva.gov/Services/CUE-Bus or call 703-385-7859, TTY711.
  • For Metrobus schedule information: https://www.wmata.com/schedules/
  • Free Student Bus passes are available to all Fairfax County and City of Fairfax County/FCPS middle school and high school students (registered 7-12 grade ONLY).
  • For trip planning visit https://www.wmata.com/schedules/trip-planner/ (or use a third-party app like Google Maps, Transit App, Moovit etc.)
  • Participants must reside in Fairfax County or the City of Fairfax, regardless of which school - public, private or home school - they attend.
  • For pass distribution information, check with your school's administration or email mlphillips@fcps.edu.
  • Private school or home school students in middle or high school (7-12 grade) who reside in Fairfax County or the City of Fairfax may obtain a pass by contacting mlphillips@fcps.edu.
