September is Hunger Action Month

How do you know if someone is hungry? When was last time they ate? These are hard questions to answer because hunger can be invisible in our community.

Experiencing hunger or food insecurity can look different across households.

Children may have lunch at school, but do they have enough to eat for dinner at home?
Are parents skipping dinner so their children have enough to eat? (This is more common than you might think!)
Does an older adult’s fixed income leave enough money to buy food after covering housing and medical costs?
For a young adult who has just lost their job, which expense is the easiest to cut or replace with free resources – transportation, utilities, rent, or food?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps thousands of households afford nutritious food at various retailers and farmers markets across the county. We know there are even more individuals and families who could benefit from SNAP, but we need your help reaching them!

You can help fight hunger by raising awareness about SNAP in Fairfax County. Use the messages, graphics, newsletter and email text, and video backgrounds below to spread the word.

While Fairfax County has one of the highest median household incomes in the country, not having enough food to eat is a pressing issue for many residents. Over 118,000 people in Fairfax County experience hunger and have difficulty buying enough food for their families. September is Hunger Action Month and we want to spotlight food assistance programs in Fairfax County, why some households experience periods of hunger, and why the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is so important for increasing access to affordable, nutritious food for individuals, children and families, and older adults.

Over 48,000 people in Fairfax County, currently participate in SNAP benefits. The issue of hunger is even more widespread, as more people are eligible for SNAP than are receiving benefits. SNAP provides households with a monthly amount of money to purchase eligible food items from local stores and farmers markets.

During September, the Department of Family Services will share important information about how to apply for and use SNAP benefits, what to do if you don’t qualify for SNAP, and where to go if you’d like to donate or access food in Fairfax County.
