Resources for Maintaining Healthy Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is often called the "silent killer" because it usually has no warning signs or symptoms. Yet it can lead to serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. That is why knowing your blood pressure numbers is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your health.

Illustration of blood cells flowing through an artery. Text reads: "When the heart pumps blood through the arteries, the blood puts pressure on the artery walls. This is called blood pressure."
An Illustration of Health Problems Caused by High Blood Pressure. A line drawing of the human body with the focus on the brain, heart and the kidneys. Surrounding the body are icons paired with the following text: Chronic Kidney Disease, Pregnancy-Related Complications, Other Health Problems, Stroke, Cognitive Decline and Dementia, Vision Decline or Loss, Heart Disease, and Peripheral Artery Disease. The CDC logo is in the lower right.

Public Blood Pressure Kiosks

Checking your numbers does not always require a visit to a doctor's office. Self-service blood pressure kiosks, located in many pharmacies and community locations, provide a quick and convenient way to check your blood pressure in just a few minutes.

While these kiosks can be a helpful first step in monitoring your health, the accuracy of a reading can be affected by factors such as body position, cuff fit and recent physical activity. Use your kiosk reading as an initial screening tool, not a diagnosis.

If your reading is higher than normal or you have concerns about your blood pressure, schedule an appointment with your health care provider for a complete evaluation and follow-up.

Want to find a kiosk near you? Below are two online tools to help you locate stores that host a kiosk.
