Background:
May is Older Adults Month, and this year’s theme “Flip the Script on Aging” challenges us to change the way we think and talk about getting older, as well as confront stereotypes and incorrect ideas about aging.
During this month, we honor the contributions of older adults, explore the many opportunities for staying active and engaged as we age, and highlight the opportunities for purpose, discovery, and connection that come with aging.
Fairfax County has prioritized the ability for our residents to age in place, and through the implementation of our SHAPE the Future of Aging Plan, we provide resources both to protect those who are vulnerable and to connect and engage older adults. These include community events, volunteer opportunities and a wide variety of services to help older adults to learn, connect, and thrive in Fairfax County.
May is also Adult Abuse Prevention Month which recognizes that vulnerable older adults may need protection from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
By observing these two recognitions, we have an opportunity to celebrate the strength of older adults and the aging network in Fairfax County, ensure residents have a supportive environment where they can age well in their communities for as long as possible and have supports that protect those who may not be able to protect themselves.
Motion:
Therefore, Mr. Chairman, I would ask without objection that we designate May as Older Americans and Adult Abuse Prevention Month in Fairfax County and request that the Office of Public Affairs prepare a proclamation to be presented inside the Board room on April 22.
