Fairfax County Park Authority Celebrates Women’s History Month

Women's history Banner

Happy Women’s History Month from the Fairfax County Park Authority! Throughout FCPA’s history, extraordinary women have provided the inspiration, leadership and vision that has contributed to the creation of beautiful park facilities and a diverse range of program offerings. This month, the Park Authority is pleased to celebrate the accomplishments and impact of these women on the Park Authority’s nationally recognized park and recreation system.

The Park Authority is offering a variety of women-focused programs in spring 2024, including self-defense courses, golf lessons and historic demonstrations. For a full list of offerings and to register for a program, visit the Women’s History Month webpage.

Women's Work in the 19th Century

Throughout history of the United States, the labor of women, such as those who lived and worked at Colvin Run Mill, have been invaluable to families, communities and the nation. Join us on March 16 at 3 p.m. for a closer look at the work 19th century women did at home and in the labor market, as you try some “simple” tasks from the 1800s, including baking, candle-making, sewing and washing clothes the old-fashioned way.

In addition to offering a number of exciting programs, several FCPA staff members have shared reflections on their experiences as women working in parks and recreation, career success and the power of female mentorship.

Women in Parks: Taking the Reins at Frying Pan Farm Park

As someone who has spent her whole life around horses, Brooke Fries is a natural fit for her role as the equestrian manager at Frying Pan Farm Park. She works daily to grow the county’s equestrian program through arena rentals, horse shows and more. Her passion for equestrianism enriches the lives of residents and animals alike.
