~Celebration set for November 16~
There will be a lot to celebrate when the county recognizes Fairfax Recycles Day on November 15, which is the same day as the national "America Recycles Day".
In late October, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors proclaimed November 15 as Fairfax Recycles Day, but the county’s actual celebration event is on Saturday, November 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Gerry Hyland Government Center parking lot at 8350 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, Virginia 22309.
Join the Solid Waste Management Program for a recycling drop-off and touch-a-truck event, as DPWES recognizes several major milestones:
- A Notable Birthday- The Purple Can Club glass recycling program turns five years old. To date, county residents have recycled over 47 million pounds of glass. That is enough glass jars, stacked end to end, to wrap around the Beltway over six times!
- A Steady Track Record- Fairfax County residents have consistently recycled around 45% of their waste year to year.
- A Zero-Waste Vision- The county is developing key strategies to help meet its zero waste goal of diverting 90% t of all waste from landfills or incineration. More information on the plan development can be found here- https://engage.fairfaxcounty.gov/zerowastesurvey.
At the event county residents can drop-off household batteries, glass, textiles, food waste, plastic bags, and E-waste (no larger than 24”x24”), including computers, laptops, hard drives, toner/ink cartridges, cell/smart phones, power supplies, audio equipment, mice, keyboards and servers. There will be snacks and recycling and waste reduction resources, as well as a variety of trucks on display.
When we reduce, reuse and recycle our trash, we lessen our environmental impact and create a more healthy and livable community. If you’re ready to do your part, we’ll see you on November 16.
County residents who can’t make the event can always stop by the 95 Landfill Complex and 66 Transfer Station to drop off hard-to-recycle items and household hazardous waste. Unsure if an item belongs in the trash or recycling? Visit the county’s Waste Wizard site: Recycle or Trash - What Goes Where? | Public Works and Environmental Services.
