The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT), Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, and Department of Planning and Development celebrated the completion of the Springfield Community Business Center Commuter Parking Garage, a state-of-the-art facility designed to enhance public transportation infrastructure and improve commuter convenience in Fairfax County. The new garage, located in the heart of Springfield, officially opened today during a ceremony attended by county officials, community leaders and residents.
The Springfield Parking Garage offers 1,050 parking spaces, including reserved spots and charging stations for electric vehicles, bicycles and carpooling for those seeking eco-friendly transportation options. It features advanced safety and security measures such as 24/7 surveillance, enhanced lighting, and emergency call stations, making it a safe and convenient option for commuters. The garage operates 24/7, providing continuous access for all users.
In addition to providing state-of-the-art multi-modal transportation amenities, the facility will contribute to the vision of a well-connected community business center. A pedestrian bridge will help safely connect residents and commuters across Old Keene Mill Road to the retail establishments of Springfield Plaza The bridge's "Springfield" sign, spanning multiple lanes across Old Keene Mill Road Road, will create a gateway to the community and strengthen pride in the area.
Finally, the commuter center will also feature innovative civic gathering spaces integrated into the project that can serve the community for markets, performances, classes, activities and events. Through creativity and smart urban design, the facility can act a catalyst for further revitalization in the central Springfield area.
A notable feature of the Springfield Parking Garage is a dedicated lane for slugging, a unique form of commuter carpooling that previously took place at the garage location. This lane will facilitate quick and efficient pickups and drop-offs, further promoting sustainable transportation options.
Chairman Jeffrey McKay of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors said: "The opening of the Springfield Parking Garage marks a significant milestone in our efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and reduce traffic congestion in Fairfax County. This facility will provide much-needed parking for commuters and support our broader goals of promoting sustainable and convenient transportation options,"
“Today’s opening of the Springfield Community Business Center Commuter Parking Garage highlights the continued emphasis on providing multimodal travel options," said Bill Cuttler, Northern Virginia District Engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation. "The dedicated access lanes for carpools and buses are beneficial for commuters, with such close proximity to the I-95 express lanes and toll-free travel. The new pedestrian bridge over Old Keene Mill Road and bicycle storage area amplifies our commitment to making our region more accessible for daily pedestrian, bicyclist, and public transit commuters. We thank the county and our partners for working together to complete this project, adding another reliable transportation option to Northern Virginia."
Supervisor Rodney L. Lusk of the Franconia District added: "This new parking garage is a testament to our commitment to creating a more connected and accessible community. It will serve as a vital hub for commuters and residents, making it easier for everyone to take advantage of public transportation and reduce their reliance on single-occupancy vehicles. I am proud to see this project come to fruition and excited for the positive impact it will have on our district,"
"The completion of this project marks a significant milestone for Fairfax County and neighboring jurisdictions as it provides commuters from across the region improved access to more travel options.
