The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is moving forward with 16 new active transportation projects following approval by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. The projects will bring new and improved crosswalks, pedestrian signals, curb ramps, lighting and other safety improvements to locations throughout the county.
The 16 projects are the latest additions to the county’s $100 million Active Transportation commitment and were selected through a multi-step prioritization process using district-wide project shortlists. All are now in the project pre-scoping phase.
The new projects, approved in August 2026, are supported by $9.9 million in funding. The BOS also approved funding for active transportation projects already underway, as well as maintenance, planning, Capital Bikeshare, trail improvements and other initiatives, bringing the total allocation to $25.4 million.
“Improved crosswalks, sidewalks, trails and traffic safety enhancements will help make biking, walking and rolling safer and more accessible for everyone,” said FCDOT Active Transportation Section Chief Laura Ghosh.

In Fall 2021, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors set a goal to identify and invest $100 million over a six-year period for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements. The goal is to make walking and biking safe and accessible for everyone, especially near schools, parks, public transportation, and other high-traffic areas.
As of Fall 2026, there have been four rounds of funding approved by the Board of Supervisors totaling $82.1 million - $65.2 million has been allocated to fund 93 new FCDOT capital projects with the remainder applied to supportive functions such as trail and traffic safety device maintenance.
An additional $8.94 million funding allocation is anticipated in the coming months.
