Implementation

The implementation strategy in the Plan specifies an approach that guides and coordinates individual projects with the phasing of urban infrastructure and community benefits necessary to achieve the overall vision.

Click below to see the various initiatives and tools designed to implement the Tysons Plan vision. For current implementation efforts and projects, see the Implementation section of the Tysons Tracker.

Zoning Ordinance

The Zoning Ordinance is the primary tool to implement the proposed mix of uses, intensities, and urban design objectives to achieve the Plan vision for Tysons.

Board of Supervisors' Follow-on Motions

To guide strategic and coordinated implementation of the Plan, at the time of Plan adoption, the Board of Supervisors approved 20 follow-on motions addressing topics including transportation infrastructure funding, affordable housing goals, urban design guidelines, and Plan monitoring.

Tysons Tracker

The annual report to the Board of Supervisors, now in an online platform called the Tysons Tracker, provides annual monitoring data and development progress updates on the Implementation of the Comprehensive Plan for Tysons.

Planning Commission’s Urban Development and Placemaking Committee

In March 2023, the Tysons Committee was re-designated as the Urban Development and Placemaking Committee, which includes and brings focus to issues in all County urban and activity centers.

The Tysons Committee was initially formed to work with county staff to draft detailed Comprehensive Plan text. Since the 2010 Plan adoption, the committee’s work focused on Plan implementation recommendations and land use issues/topics of interest to Tysons.

Tysons Community Alliance

TysonsThe Tysons Community Alliance (TCA) is a new community-based anchor organization, funded by the County, that supports the growing and dynamic Tysons community. The TCA became operational in October 2022. The Tysons Partnership is in the process of transitioning remaining operational aspects to the TCA.

The Tysons Partnership was introduced in 2011 under the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors’ direction to create a partnership organization with stakeholders to be in place prior to any redevelopment activity in Tysons. The Partnership successfully served the needs of Tysons for many years. In 2021, as Tysons had grown and changed since Plan adoption, the County, the Tysons Partnership, and community stakeholders formed a work group to explore alternative business and funding models to establish a sustainable anchor organization to meet the current needs of and support the growing Tysons community.
