Fairfax County has officially broken ground on its largest solar installation to date—a 5-megawatt solar array at the I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton, Virginia.

This transformative project will:
Generate 10 million kWh of electricity annually—enough to power 1,000 homes
Provide renewable energy to approximately 20 county buildings
Save the county an estimated $12 million over 30 years through a long-term power purchase agreement

Move us closer to our carbon neutrality goals by 2040 for government operations and 2050 countywide

The groundbreaking event brought together elected officials, agency partners, and dedicated county staff to celebrate this major step toward a more sustainable and energy-resilient future.

Construction is expected to be completed by Spring 2026.
