The latest episode of Mature Living entitled, Clubs, Friends & Community, explores how county residents are building interesting, fun and supportive social networks during retirement. These groups are often offshoots of larger organizations and reflect a wide range of interests such as photography, theater, genealogy, investment and public service. Jennifer Disano, Executive Director, and Alice Slayton Clark, Communications and Program Associate, both with the Osher Lifelong Learning Center (OLLI) at George Mason University, explain the wide variety clubs and groups within their organization, and three members share their experiences. The second part of the program features Jim Link, President of the Fairfax Genealogical Society, and Emma Marshall, Member of the African American Special Interest Group in that organization, along with Deanna White, Director of the Little River Glen Senior Center. They explain the positive impact participants from a variety of communities have on both a local and world-wide level. Phyllis Palombi, a licensed professional counselor and the Hunter Mill District representative on the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging advocates the importance of being involved in a community for an individual’s mental health.
