Youth Medication-Assisted Treatment, or YMAT, is the use of FDA-approved medicine in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat substance use disorders. Research shows that this combination of medicine and therapy can successfully treat substance use disorders. Some medications can also help sustain recovery. Others can prevent or reduce opioid overdose.
YMAT services are available to people 12 to 22 years old. After that, we will help you to transition to receiving services at CSB's Addiction Medicine Clinic.
You must meet eligibility criteria to get YMAT services. You must be:
12–22 years old,
Using opiates, and
Living in Fairfax County.
What to Expect with YMAT
Our team is here to provide judgement-free support. Here is what to expect when you get started in the YMAT program.
The YMAT team will contact you and your family within 48 hours of when we receive your contact information to schedule a pre-admission appointment.
During a pre-admission appointment, we will do a nursing assessment and a diagnostic evaluation.
The next step is to complete a clinical evaluation. We will ask questions about your medical history, substance use and mental health. This will help decide the appropriate medication for you or your child.
Following these evaluations, you will attend an orientation. You will learn about the YMAT program and what is expected. We will also work together on recovery goals and a treatment plan.
We will then provide ongoing support. This may include medication management, case management, peer support and therapy.
For Parents and Caregivers
Multiple service options are available to meet your child's needs. Services are based on eligibility.
We encourage parent/guardian involvement for all therapy and Medication Assisted Treatment appointments.
We offer several options for you to speak with a behavioral health professional about opioid use disorders, treatment options and mental health concerns.

About Opioids
Opioids — like fentanyl, heroin, hydrocodone, methadone, morphine, oxycodone and tramadol — act on the brain, producing a euphoric effect. They are highly addictive, even deadly, if used improperly.
Only take pills prescribed by your doctor and that come from a licensed pharmacy. Never buy pills from social media, online, on the street or from unlicensed pharmacies.
The only way to reverse an opioid overdose is to administer naloxone. We offer an Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education trainings (REVIVE! kit training) that includes a free box of naloxone. Learn more and sign up to take a class.
