At the time of a Temporary Detention Order hearing where the outcome of involuntary psychiatric treatment is determined, Mandatory Outpatient Treatment (MOT) is one of four options that the Special Justice may consider. If an individual agrees to MOT, he or she will need to agree to the conditions set forth below.
The Mandatory Outpatient Treatment (MOT) program is a 90-day court-supervised program for adults who have been recently hospitalized following a mental health or substance use-related emergency. If an individual agrees to participate in the MOT program, they must agree to the following conditions:
- To proceed to the Emergency Services department at the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) Merrifield Center (8221 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive, Fairfax, VA 22031) immediately upon discharge from the hospital to complete an initial evaluation.
- To meet with an MOT monitor provided by the CSB; appointments may occur as frequently as once per week, depending on individual circumstances.
- To participate in a mental health and a substance use evaluation.
- To meet with a psychiatrist for a medication evaluation, if directed by the MOT monitor, and to take all medication as prescribed.
- To remain abstinent from both alcohol and non-prescribed drugs.
- To participate in urine drug screening or Breathalyzer tests, if directed by the MOT monitor.
- To participate in outpatient or inpatient substance use treatment, if directed by the MOT monitor.
- To pay any fees associated with monitoring compliance with MOT. The cost for case management during MOT is $326.50 per each 30-day period; however, individuals may be eligible for a reduced cost based on income. In some cases, additional fees may be charged for additional needed services.
- To provide consent for the MOT monitor to speak with private treatment providers, if applicable.
- To cooperate with the MOT monitor and follow the designed treatment protocol to address mental health or substance use disorder treatment needs.
If an individual has private health insurance with existing treatment providers, the CSB's MOT monitor will monitor attendance at appointments and adherence to a treatment plan. If an individual has private health insurance but has not yet identified treatment providers, the CSB's MOT monitor will assist with identifying and using those providers; once an individual is using those providers, the MOT monitor will then track attendance at appointments and adherence to treatment plans. If an individual has no health insurance, the CSB's MOT monitor will assist with identifying and using cost-effective community providers, or in certain circumstances, a CSB case manager and psychiatrist.
