The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) offers outpatient treatment for people with substance use disorders through a program called Substance Use Outpatient Treatment. We are accepting referrals as of September 2026.
What is Substance Use Outpatient Treatment?
Our Substance Use Outpatient Treatment program is the least intensive level of treatment for people with a substance use disorder. The program will help you build coping skills, prevent relapse and refer you to other resources as needed to help you meet your goals.
As part of the program, you will meet one-on-one with a case manager, join group sessions and get help planning your care. If you have a behavioral health issue in addition to your substance use diagnosis, you can take part in a psychiatric check-up and medication review. You also have the option to participate in individual therapy.
Our treatment is based on a medical model that sees addiction as a disease with times of improvement and times when more support is needed. If you start to use substances again, we won’t discharge you from the program.
How Long is Substance Use Outpatient Treatment?
You will participate in services about once per week for approximately 90 days to earn a completion certificate. You can stop there, or continue with the program’s maintenance phase that includes an individualized treatment schedule.
Who Can Get Treatment through Substance Use Outpatient Treatment?
Substance Use Outpatient Treatment is for adults who:
- Are 18 years and older
- Live in Fairfax County or the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church
- Have a substance use disorder as their primary diagnosis
- Don’t want to take medicine for addiction treatment
If you have opioid use disorder or alcohol use disorder and would like to take medicine for addiction, our Office-Based Addiction Treatment may be a better fit.
How Much Does Substance Use Outpatient Treatment Cost?
CSB accepts many types of insurance to help pay for your treatment. This program accepts:
- Medicaid
- Medicare
- Some commercial insurance

Where and When Does Substance Use Outpatient Treatment Happen?
We offer Substance Use Outpatient Treatment services at the Addiction Medicine Clinic (AMC) at the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health. AMC is located on the first floor in suite 1-417.
Whether you want more information about the program, are already receiving services or are trying to refer someone to the program, call 703-559-3188 and ask for the Substance Use Outpatient Treatment team.
We provide services Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. It’s a good idea to make an appointment, but we will try to help if you come without one.
We offer group sessions on Wednesday mornings that are open to anyone enrolled in Substance Use Outpatient Treatment.
