Scam Jam 2025: Protecting Adults from Scams and Abuse

Woman speaks at podium on stage. Hundreds gathered on April 30 at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale for Scam Jam 2025. This year’s theme was Prevention, Protection and Prosecution: Ensuring the Safety of Older Adults Through Adult Protective Services. Members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the Virginia House of Delegates welcomed guests to the annual event.  Scam Jam brought together experts in elder abuse, law enforcement, federal, state, and county agencies, and others who shared information and tips on how to keep older adults safe from fraud, abuse, and exploitation. Keynote speaker Paul Greenwood, a former district attorney from San Diego, discussed his experience prosecuting more than 750 cases of elder abuse. Attendees watched a short film from The Clowder Group, HOAP: Heroes of Adult Protection. The film highlights the dedicated efforts of Adult Protective Services staff and community members working together to protect those who cannot always protect themselves. Alycia Blackwell, deputy director of the Department of Family Services, closed out the day with remarks of encouragement and sound support for the important work that helps to keep older adults safe. AARP Virginia and Fairfax County Silver Shield Anti-Scam Campaign thank everyone for attending Scam Jam 2025!
