Reopening Information

  • Lewinsville Adult Day Health Care reopens on Monday, August 23, 2021
  • The Herndon, Mount Vernon and Lincolnia Centers reopen on Tuesday, September 7, 2021

Lewinsville Adult Day Health Care is opening first to pilot the program’s new health and safety strategies. It was selected for the pilot because the center is the largest physical space of the four centers. During the two week pilot period, program staff will evaluate the new strategies and refine accordingly, so that best practices can be universally applied across the other three centers.

Adult Day Health Care program leadership selected this reopening timeframe for several reasons.

  • We are able to safely provide service to our participants. The combination of vaccination of the older adult population and staff with mitigation strategies ensures our ability to care for the health of our participants
  • Staff is available. During the pandemic, almost all Adult Day Health Care staff were assigned to assist the Fairfax County Health Department with COVID-19 testing, vaccination, and other aspects of the emergency. Now, the pandemic response operation is able to release these staff members back to Adult Day Health Care to continue their work with the service.
  • Vaccination rates among the local older adult population are high: This ensures greater protection for participants at our centers.

We are looking forward to reconnecting with our participants and caregiver and providing this essential service.

COVID-19 Vaccination

COVID-19 vaccine is not required for participants at this time, but it is highly encouraged for the safety of participants and staff. Vaccination status is recorded as part of a participant’s intake. Adult Day Health Care is a medical service and vaccination status is part of the participant’s medical history. According to CDC the COVID-19 vaccine helps people from getting sick or severely ill and might also protect people around them.

COVID-19 vaccine is not required for Adult Day Health Care staff but it is highly encouraged. We provide ample connections to vaccination opportunities if requested by staff.

Caregivers will be required to complete a daily health screen for the participant each day they are at the center. Adult Day Health Care is a health care service with a nurse onsite each day, all day. That said, anyone who presents with a health issue – whether it is COVID-19 or something else – will be assessed by our nurse and appropriate action will be taken. As always, caregivers must be attentive to the health of their loved one and keep them home if they have any signs of illness.

Any participant who presents with COVID-19 symptoms will be separated from others at the center and their family will be called to pick them up. In the meantime, the participant will be cared for by a member of our team. Each center has a designated room for these situations so the ill individual can safely be separated from others. Before the participant can return to the center, they must be medically assessed and have a negative COVID-19 test. Those positive for COVID-19 will follow isolation and quarantine guidelines before being cleared to return to the center. Those participants with a negative test result will be permitted to return 24 hours after they are fever-free. Participants with COVID-19 symptoms who are not tested can return 10 days after they are fever-free for 24 hours.

Adult Day Health Care has always followed a strict protocol for deep cleaning and disinfection of its centers. Given the pandemic, these procedures have been elevated even more to include:

  • Enhanced Cleaning of high contact areas, door handles, counter tops, hand railings, and other high-touch areas in between center activities
  • Thorough center cleaning by a professional company daily after the center closes
  • Hand sanitizer stations throughout the center, and staff regularly distribute hand sanitizer to participants

Program Information

Our participants enjoy a program of socialization, exercise and mental stimulation all day, each day they attend the center. Adult Day Health Care activities are built around each participant – something we call “Person Centered Care.” This means that we customize each participant’s day according to their individual needs and interests. This mantra remains unchanged. The only adaptation is that all centers will not be supplemented with volunteer-led activities at this time, nor will family members be able to stop into the centers for lunch or activities at this present time. We will adapt this policy as needed in the future.

Virtual programming will be phased-out for Adult Day Health Care. Virtual participants will have the opportunity to join Senior Center virtual programs if interested.

When our center reopens, we will need to keep enrollment limited due to health and safety protocols. In the past, our standard policy was for participants to enroll a minimum of two days a week so they could benefit from routine. However, we are relaxing the policy to allow participants a single day enrollment to ensure we can accommodate everyone who wants to come back. Your re-enrollment may not be for all of the days you enjoyed previously, but we are working to get you back to the level of enrollment you previously enjoyed.
