Travelers Awareness: Mpox Declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern Amidst New Outbreak

Mpox Outbreaks

  • The ongoing global outbreak that began in 2022 and affected the United States has been caused by clade II.  
  • The large ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and surrounding countries has been caused by clade I. 
    • On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox to be a public health emergency of international concern. The declaration is WHO’s highest level of alert for countries around the world. 
    • So far, there have been no clade I mpox cases reported in the U.S.  
    • The first clade I mpox case reported outside of Africa was in Sweden.
