Background:
The development of affordable housing to meet a wide variety of needs in the community continues to be a major challenge that requires significant, ongoing investment by the Board of Supervisors. Our adopted affordable housing development goal – 10,000 new affordable homes by 2034 – demands that the Board “keep its foot on the gas.” We all know homelessness in our community, particularly among individuals with special needs, is a challenge that can only truly be solved by affordable housing. As we have discussed, there is a need for about 300 additional units of permanent supportive housing to serve the population of chronically homeless singles in Fairfax County.
While we are making significant progress and have a substantial number of permanent supportive housing units in our development pipeline, we need to continue to invest specifically in this type of much-needed housing in all areas of the county.
Motion:
I move as part of the Carryover Process that the Board as a consideration item commit $500,000 in unallocated funds for inclusion in our competitive affordable “Housing Blueprint” pool, to support predevelopment and construction costs for housing projects that include permanent supportive housing.
