April 11, 2023 Board Matter: Bike to Work Day May 19

Joint with Chairman Jeff McKay and Providence District Supervisor Dalia Palchik

Background:

Mr. Chairman, less than two weeks after the upcoming Tour de Hunter Mill is another great cycling event, Bike To Work Day, which takes place on Friday, May 19. Fairfax County, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation, Commuter Connections, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) and neighboring governments are hosting the 22nd annual event. It is a great opportunity to enjoy a healthy and environmentally friendly commute to work and enjoy some of our scenic roads and trails. Even if a resident is working from home, they can participate by biking to one of the many pit stops across the county to get out of the house and enjoy the fun. And residents with longer commutes should consider biking as a first and last mile to a bus or train stop. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation has great resources including maps and how to register on their web page at fairfaxcounty.gov/transportation/bike-work-day-2023.

Motion:

Therefore, Mr. Chairman, I move that the Board of Supervisors proclaim Friday, May 19, 2023 as Bike to Work Day. In addition, I ask that the Fairfax County Department of Transportation and the Office of Public Affairs promote Bike to Work Day to our residents and businesses.
