The most important step is to contact the Department of Tax Administration and discuss your options.

We may ask if you can afford to make a partial payment now, or when in the future you would be able to start making payments. These details help us create a solution that works for you.

At any time of year, circumstances like reduced income, illness or other family emergencies can make it difficult to pay your taxes in full by the deadline. We’re committed to treating everyone with understanding and working toward a resolution together.

My Fairfax Secure Portal

MyFairfax is your home to conduct key online transactions with the county. This is an ongoing, county-wide initiative to provide you with faster and easier access to all of your county information in a secure environment. Currently, you are able to access your vehicle, business tangible property, and real estate tax information. Additional services, taxes, and fees will be added later.

Create your account to include all of your vehicles and properties, then use your account to view and pay your bills online, change your mailing address, view your online payment history, and perform vehicle registrations and updates.

Understanding Vehicle Taxes

By state law, the County must assess a vehicle's value as of Jan. 1 based on a recognized, third-party pricing guide. Fairfax County, as well as all Virginia localities, uses the J.D. Power Official Used Car Guide. While vehicle values may fluctuate during the year, the law requires the County to use the value as of Jan. 1, and the assessment cannot be readjusted on depreciating values throughout the year.
