Design Public Hearing on the Route 28 Widening Project Set for Sept. 23, 2019

For Immediate Release
Sept. 5, 2019
#T30_19

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and the Federal Highway Administration, will hold a design public hearing on the Route 28 widening project, Monday, Sept. 23, 2019, at 6:30 p.m., in the cafeteria of Centreville Elementary School, 14330 Green Trails Blvd., in Centreville.

Documentation for the National Environmental Policy Act and National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106 and 36 CFR Part 800), which includes information on the potential effects of the proposed project on properties listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, and property impact information, also will be available for review and comment.

The format of the hearing will include an open house beginning at 6:30 p.m., with a presentation at 7 p.m., and time afterward for public comments, questions and answers. Comments are due Monday, Oct. 7, 2019.

Project Background

The Route 28 corridor has experienced increased congestion for many years. The proposed project calls for widening Route 28 in Fairfax County for a distance of approximately 2.3 miles from the bridge over Bull Run to the interchange at Route 29, including:

  • Widening the existing four lane roadway to six lanes;
  • Adding additional lanes on side street to improve intersections;
  • Upgrading existing traffic signals;
  • Removing selected unsignalized median crossovers (breaks);
  • Improving bicycle and pedestrian connections and crossings, including new 10-foot shared-use paths on both sides of Route 28; and
  • Installing stormwater management facilities to meet State and County criteria.

FCDOT previously held meetings on the Route 28 Widening Project on April 3, 2018, and  March 12, 2019. For meeting presentations and further information on the project, please visit: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/transportation/projects/route28-widening.
