Transportation Alert:
On May 13, 2025, the Board of Supervisors directed staff to consider a Comprehensive Plan amendment that incorporates the Active Transportation and Trails Plan, which was developed as part of the ActiveFairfax study. The Comprehensive Plan amendment process is expected to take 12 months.
The ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan study is a planning effort towards building streets, sidewalks, bikeways and trails that are welcoming places where people of diverse races, cultures, incomes, ages and abilities feel comfortable using active transportation to safely and conveniently access the widest range of destinations and to exercise, relax or spend time outdoors.
Active transportation means self-propelled, mostly human-powered travel including walking, biking, rolling (scooter, wheelchair, stroller), hiking, running, and riding for transportation and recreational purposes.
The Active Fairfax effort builds on a long history of designing and planning active transportation facilities in Fairfax County. There has been a visionary aspiration for a County connected by safe, comfortable and connected places to walk, roll, and bike since the adoption of the first Countywide Trails Plan in 1976. ActiveFairfax builds on this legacy and updates recommendations made in the Comprehensive Plan, the Bicycle Master Plan, and Countywide Trails Plan, and previous planning efforts to reflect the current conditions and best practices.
Feedback from the open houses and meetings held throughout Fall 2024 was added to previous planning initiatives, best practices, and comments collected in Spring 2021 to help develop a multi-modal transportation network that serves residents and visitors of all ages and abilities, values environmental stewardship and works toward equity. The ActiveFairfax study will establish a vision and a roadmap for implementation of safe, convenient, and enjoyable streets and trails in Fairfax County.
The project launched in the summer of 2020 and was split into two district phases:
