Countywide Policy Plan Amendment
On May 13, 2025, the Board of Supervisors authorized the consideration of a Comprehensive Plan amendment to incorporate the results of a 2019 ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan Study to update and consolidate the Plan’s Bicycle Master Plan and Countywide Trails Plan into a single, comprehensive document called the Fairfax County Active Transportation and Trails Plan. The amendment also included updates to the Transportation Element of the Policy Plan to align technical terms, definitions and facility type recommendations, map notes and to remove references to the Countywide Trails Plan and Bicycle Master Plan. Additionally, minor amendments to the Area Plan volumes were necessary to reflect updated references and maintain internal Plan consistency.
On May 5, 2026 the Board of Supervisors adopted the Active Transportation and Trails Plan recommendations, and in follow-on motions directed County staff to work with other County agencies to evaluate changes to the Zoning Ordinance and Public Facilities Manual which may be necessary to reference and align with the adopted Active Transportation and Trails Plan.
