Transportation Alert:
Lee Highway and Lee Jackson Memorial Highway will change names to Route 29 and Route 50, respectively, on July 5, 2023. Residents and businesses who are impacted will need to change their addresses, among other items. The county will pay all the costs associated with updating Virginia Department of Transportation signage along both highways. The replacement of signs could take several months. A grant program is being developed to provide financial assistance to those impacted.
Address changes will occur automatically on July 5, for county-related records, including Fairfax Water, property tax and voter registration.

BACKGROUND
In July 2021, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors established the Confederate Names Task Force (CNTF) to review the names of Lee Highway (U.S. Route 29) and Lee-Jackson Memorial Highway (U.S. Route 50), and to make recommendations to the Board on, (a) whether to change the names of one or both roadways, and (b) if such a recommendation is made, provide recommendations on proposed alternative names.
The task force has completed their work to draft and submit a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors on whether to change the names of Lee Highway (U.S. Route 29) and Lee-Jackson Memorial Highway (U.S. Route 50). Below you will find materials from the meetings and the public feedback received on this effort.
The Confederate Names Task Force online survey received over 21,000 responses. Because of the large number of comments and for readability, the responses to the survey were posted in sections by questions.
