The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)’s Northern Virginia Paving Program improves hundreds of miles of roads in Fairfax County every year. VDOT and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation FCDOT) use this program as an opportunity to increase driver, bicyclist and pedestrian safety with road and crosswalk improvements while minimizing the financial investment in restriping work.
The repaving program can include limited bike lane, shoulder and crosswalk improvements with signage and markings. Bike lanes or shoulders are usually installed where excess pavement width is available. Many factors need to be considered for the installation of crosswalks, including the traffic speeds and volumes, available sight distance, presence of curb ramps, and pedestrian activity.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FCDOT held community meetings virtually in 2021 and 2022. For those who could not attend, a video of each meeting will be available on the district paving and restriping page after the event.
