The Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) Northern Virginia Paving Program improves hundreds of miles of roads in Fairfax County every year. VDOT and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) use this program as an opportunity to increase safety for people who walk, bike, and drive with road and crosswalk improvements while minimizing the financial investment in restriping work.
The repaving program can include limited bike lane, shoulder and crosswalk improvements with signage and markings. Bike lanes or shoulders are usually installed where excess pavement width is available. Many factors need to be considered for the installation of crosswalks, including the traffic speeds and volumes, available sight distance, presence of curb ramps, and pedestrian activity.
