Foster Care Facts That Might Surprise You

There are a lot of misconceptions about foster care, foster parents, and the children and families involved. This section aims to dispel some of those notions and provide clarity for those interested in supporting foster care.

Fact: Did you know? Teens in foster care are just like other kids their age. They want structure, stability and a loving home environment.

Explanation: Every child in foster care has experienced some trauma, and brings strengths, abilities, and challenges regardless of age. Fostering teens provides an opportunity to help them “grow up,” master life skills and become truly independent. That can include driving lessons, teaching basic household chores, financial budgeting, etc. With training (and in some cases) collaboration with social workers, foster parents become equipped to impact teens positively and bring out the best in their character, setting them up for success in life. Foster parents can even build lasting bonds with the teens and their birth families.
