Employment and Training - Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Employment and Training (SNAPET)

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Employment and Training (SNAPET) offers employment and training assistance to those wanting to find a job. Participants meet with a Workforce Development Specialist and receive career coaching to develop professional goals. With the help of partner resources, participants may also receive occupational skills training to support their goal of economic self-sufficiency.

SNAPET services may include:

  • Vocational training.
  • GED and high school completion options.
  • Job leads for interim and full-time employment.
  • Resume, mock interviews, and job placement assistance.
  • Supportive services, such as transportation assistance or purchasing an employer required work uniform.
  • Job retention services, including ongoing coaching, career guidance, and referrals to various local supportive service resources.

SNAP recipients are required to participate in SNAPET if they are considered ABAWD (Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents under 14 years old) as a condition of eligibility for SNAP benefits beyond the first 90 days, unless they are already working at least 20 hours a week or are exempt from working due to the following reasons:

  • Age (under 18 years old or 65 years or older).
  • Disability.
  • An adult member of a SNAP household of which a child under age 18 is present.
  • A pregnant woman.
  • A student enrolled at least half-time in an institution of higher education or any recognized school or training program.
  • Caregiver for an incapacitated person.
  • Applicants for and recipients of unemployment benefits in Virginia.
  • Participants in a drug or alcoholic treatment and rehabilitation program.
  • Any individual who is medically certified as mentally or physically unfit for work, or who has significant barriers that make them unfit for work—such as *chronic homelessness.

*Chronic homelessness is defined as meeting at least one of the components of the homeless household found in definitions for six months or more.

All participants need to fulfill 20 hours a week of employment and training activities, such as:

  • Participating in job search training activities, such as:
    • Meeting with a career counselor.
    • Attending an employment workshop or training.
    • Participating in additional workforce development programs.
  • Volunteering for any non-profit organization to help build transferable skills.
  • Completing a short-term certificate training program
  • Completing 24 job searches per month (for two consecutive months).

The SNAPET Specialists look forward to working with you towards your employment goals.

  1. Contact your SNAP worker to see if SNAPET is right for you. If you need assistance in reaching your SNAP worker, contact the Call Center at 703-324-7500.

  2. Your SNAP worker will send a referral to the SNAPET employment specialists. You will then receive a letter or email with details to attend an upcoming information and intake session.
