Project Background
The project is in the Dogue Creek Watershed and on Greendale Golf Course in the Franconia District. Our efforts help the county meet water quality standards for its residents. When completed, the project will reduce soil bank erosion and sediment pollutants and reduce nitrogen and phosphorus levels in the Dogue Creek Watershed. The county will modernize its stormwater infrastructure to meet the needs of today’s climate. Most especially, the natural habitat on the course, and elsewhere in the watershed, will be revitalized by clearing invasive brush and dropping unwanted trees in the canopy on the course and reforesting 4 acres offsite at Huntley Meadows. The Huntley Meadows Reforestation Project will serve as a mitigation bank, generating credits for the golf course that enhances our green corridors in the Huntington community.
Project Description
The stream restoration project will restore 1,905 linear feet of stream channel and dredge a pond that serves a 200 plus acres drainage area. The existing channel is unstable as evidenced by tall, vertical, raw stream banks and the deep and widening stream channel. This instability erodes away property, undermines trees causing them to fall, and threatens storm sewer infrastructure throughout the corridor. Eroded sediment transported to the wet pond adversely impacts its effectiveness, risking flood events on the Greendale Golf Course. This project is part of larger efforts to restore many of Fairfax County’s degraded streams while improving overall water quality and the condition of the Chesapeake Bay.
Project Location
The project is located primarily on Greendale Golf Course, beginning upstream at culverts south of Treetop Lane and ending at a wet pond on the golf course east of McKenna Way. The project is in the Franconia Magisterial District. Construction entrances to the project will be at Horgan Court and Treetop Lane.
Project Phase
The final design was approved in June 2025. Since then, Stormwater Planning and Utility Design and Construction have been collaborating to secure construction and administration contractors. We anticipate Construction Notice-To-Proceed to be issues in the Fall 2025.
