The Flood Mitigation Assistance Program (FMAP), administered by the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD), provides technical and financial assistance to Fairfax County residents and landowners to reduce flood risk, improve resilience, and protect homes and other structures from flooding. Twenty-seven (27) specific practices are currently eligible for grant funding under FMAP, covering a range of small-scale and site-specific structural flood mitigation measures.
Reporting Period: July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025
In fiscal year 2025, NVSWCD awarded over $99,000 in FMAP grant funds. These funds directly supported 38 flood risk mitigation projects on private properties throughout Fairfax County.
These investments represent continued progress in implementing small-scale, site-specific projects that cumulatively contribute to reduced localized flooding, lower damage during storms, and increased resilience across the community.
First Half of Fiscal Year 2026 Program Accomplishments
Reporting Period: July 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025
For the first half of fiscal year 2026, NVSWCD awarded $124,000 in FMAP grant funds, an amount which exceeds the entire amount awarded in fiscal year 2025. The funds supported the installation of 36 flood risk mitigation projects on private properties throughout the county.
Community Engagement and Outreach
Community engagement remains a core component of FMAP. During the reporting periods, NVSWCD conducted approximately 25 site visits to provide guidance, onsite assessments, and tailored recommendations to residents seeking to understand and reduce their flood vulnerability through FMAP.
In addition, NVSWCD received 45 inquiries from landowners seeking more information about FMAP, indicating ongoing and increasing interest in flood mitigation assistance.
These activities strengthen community awareness of flood risk, improve understanding of mitigation options, and help residents navigate the technical and administrative aspects of applying for FMAP funding.
Program Impact and Continuing Commitment
NVSWCD remains firmly committed to working with residents to protect homes, properties, and families from the threat of flooding. The program continues to prioritize practical, cost-effective measures that reduce localized flooding and enhance resilience for Fairfax County residents.
