Report a Sidewalk or Trail Gap

Photo of Sidewalk GapMany streets in Fairfax County were developed without sidewalks, or with a sidewalk on just one side. In fact, Fairfax County has identified more than 1,000 miles of missing sidewalks and trails. While the County is working on filling in these gaps with limited resources, new developments are often required to build new sidewalk just along their frontage, (which can wind up both filling in and leaving gaps in the sidewalk.) For more information, please visit the Fairfax County Department of Transportation resources:

Challenges to completing the sidewalk and trail infrastructure center around the lack of dedicated public funds for sidewalk construction. The estimated cost of installing new sidewalks or trails is between $1,000-$2,000 per linear foot, including all engineering, utilities, right-of-way acquisition and construction. Funding occasionally becomes available for high priority projects through existing revenue sources, local and federal grants, as well as bond referendums.

To report a gap in the sidewalk or trail network, please contact the FCDOT Active Transportation Program by using the red feedback button below, or by calling 703-877-5600, TTY 711. Residents also have the option to construct sidewalks in their neighborhood under a Virginia Department of Transportation permit; call 703-259-1733 or email VDOT for more information.
