1. Tysons Land Use Task Force

In 2004, 20 proposals for redevelopment in Tysons were submitted to the county in anticipation of the future Silver Line stations.  In response, the Board, in May 2005, established the Tysons Land Use Task Force to coordinate a vision for the future of Tysons based on best practices in transit-oriented development.  With public input from a series of community workshops, the Task Force presented its recommendations to the Board in September 2008.

The Board referred the Task Force's recommendations to the Planning Commission, which created a five member committee to work with county staff drafting detailed Comprehensive Plan text. The Board also directed that the Tysons Plan be informed by a thorough analysis of transportation impacts, public facility needs, anticipated costs and revenues, and population and employment forecasts.  

2. Plan Amendment Adoption (2010)

Based on the committee's work, the Planning Commission delivered its recommended Tysons Plan text to the Board in May 2010. On June 22, 2010, the Board adopted the Comprehensive Plan amendment for the Tysons Corner Urban Center and approved a series of follow-on motions to guide the implementation of the new Plan. The Plan amendment and motions recommended additional work and studies, such as street grid and other transportation studies, urban design guidelines, and a transportation funding plan.

The Tysons Plan received the 2011 Daniel Burnham Award from the American Planning Association. This prestigious award is granted to only one urban plan in the nation each year, for advancing the science and art of planning.

3. Tysons Implementation (Plan Amendment S13-II-TY1)

On March 5, 2013, the Board authorized an amendment to the Tysons Plan (Plan Amendment S13-II-TY1) to reconcile the text and maps with the studies and planning activities completed since 2010. Based on community feedback, proposed Plan text was advertised for public hearing, along with a companion Zoning Ordinance Amendment for the Planned Tysons Corner (PTC) Urban District to bring the provisions of the PTC District into accord with the proposed Plan text.

The Plan amendment was adopted by the Board of Supervisors on March 14, 2017. For more details about this plan amendment process, see the Tysons Implementation Plan Amendment S13-II-TY1 page.  

4. Housing and Workforce Dwelling Unit (WDU) Plan Amendment

On February 23, 2021, the Board adopted a Comprehensive Policy Plan amendment for rental Workforce Dwelling Units (WDUs) with specific, updated guidance for Tysons. The amendment brought into alignment the policies and objectives of the Housing Element of the Comprehensive Plan with the Communitywide Housing Strategic Plan and the One Fairfax Policy. 5. Route 7 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Plan Amendment

On July 27, 2021, the Board authorized the consideration of Comprehensive Plan Amendment 2021-CW-T1 - Route 7 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in the Dranesville and Providence Districts. The BRT route will be implemented between the West Falls Church and the Spring Hill Metrorail Stations, with five potential stations identified in the Tysons Urban Center. On July 25, 2023, the Board adopted Amendments 2017-53 & 2017 P-17, which amended the Tysons Plan text with the BRT alignment and modified the streetscape cross sections sand transportation maps to show the BRT.

6. For-Sale WDU Plan Amendment

On September 10, 2024, the Board adopted a Comprehensive Plan amendment for For-Sale Workforce Dwelling Units (WDUs). The AMI income tiers were lowered for non-high rise for-sale construction; no changes were proposed or adopted for For-Sale WDUs in high rise condominiums in Tysons. Revisions to the Boards’ Tysons Urban Center WDU Policy Administrative Guidelines, the preferred administrative tool to administer and regulate WDUs proffered in conjunction with a rezoning application, were also adopted.
