Major Completed Projects in Tysons

Fairfax Connector Route 798, Tysons to Bethesda

  • Service started Sept. 2024 798 ad
  • Weekday rush hour service only with five stops.

Route 7 Widening: Reston Avenue to Dulles Toll Road

  • Completed in May 2024
  • Project Cost: $313.9M
  • This project widened Route 7 from four to six lanes and added shared-use paths along seven miles of Route 7 from Reston Avenue to Jarrett Valley Drive.

Old Meadow Pedestrian Bridge

  • Completed in October 2022.
  • Project Cost: $13.4M.
  • This shared-use path runs nearly half a mile over the beltway, providing a new link between the Tysons Corner Center mall and Tysons residential areas east of I-495.

Jones Branch Connector

  • Completed in March 2020.
  • Project Cost: $60M.
  • Connection for pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles between Tysons East (Route 123) and West (Jones Branch Drive). 

Route 7 Bridge Over Dulles Toll Road

  • Completed in May 2018.
  • Project Cost: $44.82M.
  • Bridge widened from 4 to 6 lanes with a shared-use path on both sides. Improved access to Tysons from the west.

Old Meadow Road Realignment

  • Completed in November 2020.
  • Part of Dulles Rail Phase I funding.

Fairfax County Transit Strategic Plan

  • This study is a 10-year bus service plan for Fairfax County (Fairfax Connector and Metrobus).

Completed Tysons Transportation Studies

Countywide Transit Network StudyTransitStudy identified transit needs throughout county and includes recommendations specific to Tysons.Completed 2016
Tysons East Dulles Connector StudyRoadTwo alternatives were recommended to facilitate a new connection from the Dulles Connector Road to the Tysons East roadway network.Completed 2016. Two preferred alternatives have been selected to be carried forward for further study in a future Interchange Modification Report. To date, $2M has been approved for preliminary design.
Fairfax County Strategic PlanRoadThis study is from Fy 2016-2022 Transit Development Plan (TDP), 10-year bus service plan for Fairfax County  Completed 2016
State Street StudyRoadStudy includes potential alignments and impacts for the newly proposed State Street. Three options identified. Completed 2014. The County purchased a key piece of property for the construction of State Street in June 2019.
Dulles Toll Road Ramp StudyRoadStudy includes an operational analysis of, and conceptual design for, new ramps from the Dulles Toll Road to Tysons.Completed 2014. In May 2019, the Board allocated $15M to advance two of the connections(Boone Blvd., Greensboro, Jones Branch Dr.). Actual schedules for implementing these projects will depend on the rate of development in Tysons.
Consolidated Traffic Impact Analysis (CTIAs)RoadThree CTIAs were conducted to determine current and future traffic conditions associated with planned densities and new developments and to help refine the grid network.The Tysons East CTIA was approved in April 2013. The Tysons West CTIA was approved October 2013. The Tysons Central CTIA was approved December 2013. 
Ultimate Operation Study for the Tysons CirculatorTransitStudy covers the development of a long-tern Circulator System in Tysons by 2050.Completed 2013. 
Tysons Multimodal Transportation Hub AnalysisTransitRecommendations were made for multimodal transportation hubs close to Metrorail or other activity centers.Completed 2013.
Tysons Metrorail Station Access Management Study (TMSAMS)TransitA study that identified and prioritized projects that improve bus, pedestrian and bicycle access to the four Metrorail Stations in Tysons.Completed 2011. As of June 2024, 41 of the 42 projects are complete.
