Industry Sector Definitions

On the participation agreement for the Green Business Partners program, we ask you to identify your industry sector. Please use the following definitions to help you decide which one is most applicable. 

  • Architecture Services - Includes architectural services and firms.
  • Automotive - Includes automakers and producers of auto parts and tires. Also includes automobile services such as repair and body shops.
  • Banking and Financial Services - Includes banks that provide a wide range of financial services, including retail banking, loans, and money transmissions. Includes investment banks and equity (i.e., investment trusts) and non-equity investment instruments (i.e., ETFs).
  • Chemical - Includes companies that produce basic and specialty chemicals, agricultural chemicals, and petrochemicals. It also includes makers of plastics, paints, and coatings.
  • Clothing & Textile - Organizations that specialize in the manipulation of natural and synthetic fibers into usable materials such as clothing, upholstery, canvas, and carpeting. Includes manufacturers and brands related to consumer clothing products.
  • Construction and Engineering Services - Includes companies engaged in the construction of commercial buildings, infrastructure, and other major construction projects and makers of building materials as well as or creative work focusing on the engineering sciences including civil, mechanical, aeronautical, chemical electrical, photographic, sound, automotive, marine, heating and refrigerating, transportation, environmental engineering, power transmission and generation, electronics, communications, architecture, bioengineering, lasers, computers, instrumentation, etc.
  • Consulting Services - Includes expert advice in a particular domain or area of expertise such as accountancy, information technology, human resources, marketing, medicine, finance, or any professional service.
  • Consumer Products - Includes manufacturers of detergents; cleaning compounds; polishes; floor finishes; cosmetics; personal care products; home, lawn, and garden products; disinfectants; sanitizers; and automotive specialty products, household and leisure goods, as well as tobacco. Generally, any product for personal, family, or household purpose.
  • Education (Higher) - Includes colleges, universities, junior or community colleges, professional schools, technical institutes, and teacher-training schools.
  • Education (K-12) - Any school, or school system, that is classified as either primary or secondary by state practice, including kindergarten, elementary, junior high, middle, senior high, and high schools. This category does not include schools or school districts that are under city management.
  • Educational (Other) - Includes institutions that have an educational focus such as museums, nature centers, non-traditional training and certification programs, schools, and institutes; distinct from Museums, Parks, Zoos which have their own industry.
  • Food and Beverage - Includes manufacturers of processed food stuffs and drink products.  Does not include organizations with retail storefronts. Also includes food distribution companies (e.g., Sysco).
  • Healthcare - Includes healthcare providers and hospitals, biotechnology companies, as well as companies that primarily develop and distribute medical supplies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals.
  • Hotels & Lodging - Hotels, motels, resorts, and bed and breakfasts.
  • Industrial Goods & Services - Includes makers of industrial equipment, heavy machinery, and airplanes. The sector also includes companies that provide industrial services, such as pollution control, and transportation, such as railroads, airfreight, and marine transportation. 
  • Insurance - Includes property, life, and casualty insurers as well as reinsurance companies.
  • Technology & Telecommunications - Includes IT: manufacturers of computers, semiconductors, software, and office equipment as well as companies that provide technology and Internet-related services. Also includes Telecom: providers of fixed-line and wireless phone services as well as companies that make communications equipment, such as fiber-optic cable, and microwave technology.
  • Legal Services - Includes law, lawyers, or organizations that provide services on legal matters.
  • Marketing, Advertising & Public Relations - Includes organizations that provide communications, marketing, advertising, and public relations services, including web site development.
  • Media & Publishing - Includes radio and television broadcasters, entertainment companies as well as makers of movies, music, books, and newspapers, both publishers and printers. Does not include non-book printers.
  • Printing & Packaging – Includes organizations that manufacture various processes of packaging, including paper and paperboard, flexible packaging, metal, glass, hard plastic, among others. The printing packaging industry utilizes various forms of inks and technologies.
  • Recreation - Includes both outdoor recreation (i.e., ski resorts) and indoor (i.e., movie theaters).
  • Restaurants & Cafes - Includes restaurants, food service vendors, and eateries.
  • Retail - Includes supermarkets, department stores, clothing stores, discount stores, and drug stores office supply stores as well as stores that specialize in retail consumer electronics, auto parts, furnishings, and other goods.
  • Shipping - Includes any organization that moves goods through the act of shipping, conveying, carrying, or transporting by air, rail, sea, and road.  Does not include movement of people (see travel and leisure). Includes freight shipping (no airports).
  • Sports Teams & Venues – Includes sports teams and the venues in which they play.
  • Transportation - Includes human passenger travel and airports.
  • Wineries & Breweries - Includes wineries, breweries, and hard alcohol distilleries.
