Foster Family News - Donors and Sponsors Highlights

Foster Family News banner graphic

people side by sideOur partners and donors are the true power behind communities of care for Fairfax County Foster Care and Adoption. With them we can provide amazing support services, community events and after care resources. Join us in recognizing and thanking our donors and sponsors!

Touching Heart is on a mission to inspire kids and fill their young hearts with love and compassion. "We believe children can leave an imprint on the world in significant ways when they are taught just how impactful their thoughts and actions are. We really want to empower kids with the notion that one small touch to someone in their community can make a lasting impression. Having #agivingheart not only makes the world a better place, but it also becomes contagious so others will mirror that act of kindness with the same giving heart. One heart, one random act of kindness and just one person can change the world!"

Greater Little Zion Baptist Church of Fairfax has been serving the Fairfax community for 126 years, partnering with us for more than 20 of them. They have helped families with food baskets, holiday presents, backpacks and school supplies, a family fun fair, and black hair demonstrations and tea parties for our girls. The pastor, Reverend Doctor James T. Murphy Jr., says there’s a whole lot more where that came from!

Fairfax County Foster Care & Adoption families have benefited tremendously from the kindness of Saint Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church, which has partnered with us for more than 25 years. During this time, members of this congregation have helped develop the Holiday Spirit program with gifts for the more than 700 children in care; provided Easter baskets and Valentine’s Day cards; run clothing drives; and hosted holiday parties for the children and recruitment events. A special thanks goes out to Carol Mayfield and Chris Mikrut, who helped organize the Holiday Spirt program for more than 10 years.

Becky Owens at Long & Foster Real Estate has been a part of Holiday Spirit for more than 20 years. She works with Long & Foster Real Estate in Springfield. Every year, Becky solicits donations from the real estate agency’s contractors and vendors to support Fairfax County’s Foster Care & Adoption Holiday Spirit program. In the spirit of the season, the donors have been very generous so Becky can purchase generic gifts and have enough to help with children that come to FC&A at the last minute.

It’s a labor of love. “At our office, we’re more than just a team of professional real estate agents. We’re a true part of the community—your friends, your neighbors, your colleagues,” Becky said. “We shop, dine, and play at the neighborhood attractions. We volunteer with area nonprofits. We send our kids to the local schools and enjoy all that our community has to offer.”Long & Foster Real Estate, Got Junk, check gift

Foster Care & Adoption is sending a big shout out to the Holiday Spirit Donors that have sponsored and supported our children and families for more than 10 years: Tysons Galleria, Wish List Project started by Mrs. Mahon, Child Welfare Information Gateway, Cushman & Wakefield, Wide Point Cybersecurity Solutions, Touching Heart, and St Mary’s. Newer donors include Neiman Marcus, The Brooks Family, The OPHELIA Foundation, American Systems, ICF Consulting Company, Daughter of the American Revolution, and Breakfast with Santa Fair Oaks Mall. Finally, we couldn’t throw the wonderful holiday party for our children in foster care without the help of staff, volunteers, and community partners, including Richard Kilday (Santa), Mary Ann Fuss and Jill Seibert (who run the store for kids to do their holiday shopping), and Liz Murphy (who helps us pick up donations). Thanks for the dedicated commitment to Fairfax County Foster Care & Adoption. Tysons Galleria decorated tree

We were supported by a bevy of new donors in 2018, including Irving Burton Associates, a leading technology consulting services firm with federal clients, which provided a generous donation to our annual holiday party.Irvington Burton Associates group

This issue highlights Rebecca Francis and Steffani Mears of Hug Wrap for Foster Care. This organization generously donates children’s quilts throughout the year, and especially for the Adoption Awareness Month Celebration. Each child who is adopted during the celebration receives a quilt.

Steffani Mears helps gather fabric for the quilts from Burke Community Church where she is a member. Rebecca Francis makes many of the quilts herself and works with other quilters who wish to donate their quilts. As a result, more than 40 quilts have been given to children in Foster Care and Adoption. Thanks for your effort to share these one-of-a-kind creations with children in Fairfax County Foster Care and Adoption.

This issue highlights Santa's Workshop. This organization started as a simple idea to entertain children at the Foster Care and Adoption Holiday Party. Over the last 22 years, through the vision and direction of Mary Ann Fuss and Jill Seibert, Santa’s Workshop has become a cherished part of the holidays for foster families in the Department of Family Services. Check out more about their story and photos from the holiday party.
