Foster Care Unit Success Story: A Journey of Hope and Family for Daniel

When Daniel* was just six months old, his world changed in ways no child should have to face. His mother, Tania, a young teenager herself, entered foster care after enduring abuse and neglect in her own home. Despite her challenges, Tania held tightly to her role as Daniel’s mother, determined to give him a better life than the one she had known.

With the support of her foster family, Tania began to grow. She embraced parenting classes, therapy, and the chance to build new skills. She dreamed of a future where Daniel could thrive, free from the hardships she had experienced. For a time, Tania made remarkable progress—improving in school, learning to care for Daniel, and building a bond with her foster family.

Tania’s Struggle

But the path wasn’t always smooth. Tania struggled with old patterns, including substance use and difficult friendships. A heartbreaking incident led to her hospitalization, and Daniel, suddenly without a safe caregiver, entered foster care himself. At this point, the Department of Family Services stepped in to ensure Daniel’s safety and well-being.

Daniel was placed with experienced foster parents who nurtured him through his transition being separated from his mother, supporting his development and medical needs. Tania remained involved, visiting regularly and continuing to learn how to be the best mom she could be. Yet, as Daniel grew, the challenges of young parenthood weighed heavily on Tania. She continued to struggle with her substance use and mental health challenges. As she turned eighteen, she continued to break the rules of her placement and ended up involved with the criminal justice system due to her behaviors in the community when using substances.

A Relative Placement Provides Stability

A turning point came when Tania shared the identity of Daniel’s father, Mateo. Through this connection, Foster Care and Adoption discovered a loving extended family ready to step in. Mateo’s brother and sister-in-law, Miguel and Valentina, became licensed as relative foster parents and welcomed Daniel into their home. Their experience caring for children and their deep commitment to family prepared them to provide Daniel with stability, love, and a connection to his roots.

Miguel and Valentina have become more than just caregivers—they are champions for Daniel’s future. They ensure he receives the therapies and support he needs, keep him connected to both his parents, and honor his cultural heritage. They are committed to taking custody of Daniel at the next court hearing and FCA is working with them to obtain approval for the Virginia Kinship Guardianship Assistance Program (KinGAP), a step that will give Daniel a secure, loving home while preserving his family ties.

Daniel’s story is a powerful reminder of DFS’s mission: to protect children, support families, and find permanency that honors a child’s identity and connections. Thanks to the dedication of kinship (relative) foster families like Miguel and Valentina, children like Daniel can grow up surrounded by love, stability, and hope for the future.
