Our Fostering Futures program for older youth in foster care hit the road for an inspiring two-day college tour, giving seven foster youth (ages 15–19) a firsthand look at life after high school and what their futures can truly hold.

The journey kicked off with visits to Richard Bland College and Virginia Union University, where students explored the campuses, connected with admissions staff, and learned about academic programs, student life, and support services. From small college settings to the rich legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, youth began to see themselves in these spaces and imagine new possibilities.

On day two, the group continued their tour at Morgan State University and Bowie State University. As prominent HBCUs, these institutions offer not only strong academic programs but also culturally affirming environments where students can thrive both personally and academically. For many of the youth, it was powerful to experience campuses that reflect community, pride and opportunity.

Beyond the tours, this experience was about breaking barriers and building bridges. Youth in foster care often face unique challenges when accessing higher education, but this trip demonstrated that college is within reach. Our youth learned about recent legislation providing tuition-free college opportunities at Virginia public institutions for eligible youth in care. They discovered the Education and Training Voucher (ETV) program which offers financial support for education and training after high school. These resources can be game changers in helping youth turn their goals into reality.

Four dedicated chaperones organized and led this life-changing trip. Independent Living Coordinators Emily Quijano and Charisma Mallory in particular provided encouragement, mentorship and support every step of the way—helping youth feel confident as they navigated new environments and envisioned their futures.

By the end of the trip, students walked away with so much more than just brochures and photos. They gained confidence, inspiration, and a clearer vision for what’s possible. The Fostering Futures team is proud to continue creating experiences that open doors, expand horizons, and empower youth to pursue bright and successful futures.
