Family Fun Day Brings Fairfax County Foster Parents Together

On May 9, Fairfax County foster parents gathered for a relaxing Family Fun Day. Held at scenic Lake Accotink Park, the foster families and staff enjoyed time for lunch, lots of fun outdoor games, and making connections.

Foster parents provide temporary homes to children who have experienced abuse and neglect while their parents work on resolving issues so that children can return home. This is challenging work that sometimes can lead to a sense of isolation, so building community with other like-minded people is important.

The theme of the day was on Building Resilience in Children, so the event included an interactive training by the Playfully Resilient Counseling Center. This included a presentation on the 7 C’s of resilience and a scavenger hunt and nature project that sent everyone onto the trails and paths to collect leaves, acorns and other woodland items.

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman, Jeff McKay, was on hand to present the board’s proclamation of May as Foster Care Month in Fairfax County. McKay expressed support on behalf of the board, stating, “What you all are doing is extraordinary and absolutely changing the lives of children in our community, and for that we are grateful.” Melanie Vracas and Adrienne Randall, who were recently named the Fairfax County Foster Parents of the Year, graciously accepted the proclamation.

This event highlights the bonds within the foster care community and the meaningful support they receive from county staff to help them be successful. Check out the video or photos below. If you are interested in ways to support foster care, email us at BeAFosterParent@fairfaxcounty.gov.
