Copy Requests
Please include the Case # of the file you would like a copy of. If you do not have that, we will need the defendant’s Full name and Date of Birth in order to search our records.
***NOTE – Our court only holds on to case records for 10 years and then they are destroyed. We would not have any records, of any kind, to provide for a case older than that. We are only able to provide a letter of destruction, that states our retention policy and the Virginia code that it is pursuant to.
If you are unsure if you have/had a case here in General District Court, you can request a background check with Fairfax County Central Records to get a full record check.

For Defendant Requesting a Copy:
- Request accepted by phone, email, postal mail, or in person.
- Copies can be mailed via postal mail ONLY if the party can verify the address on the summons or warrant.
- If verified, copies will be mailed to that address. If party requests copy to be mailed elsewhere a Change of Address form must be completed and received PRIOR to the copy being mailed.
- If NOT able to verify, party must come to the courthouse to obtain a copy in person OR have someone else come in to pick it up for them.
For Parties to the Case (i.e. Victim, Officer, Complainant):
- Request accepted by phone, email, postal mail or in person.
- Copies can be mailed via postal mail ONLY or picked up in person.
For a Law Firm Requesting a Copy:
- Request accepted by email, postal mail, or in person.
- Copies can be mailed via postal mail ONLY if request is made on Office "Letterhead" or picked up in person.
For a Federal or State Agency Requesting a Copy:
- Request accepted by email, postal mail or in person.
- Copies can be mailed via postal mail ONLY if request is made on Office "Letterhead" or picked up in person.
For Anyone Else NOT Noted Above Requesting a Copy:
- Request accepted IN PERSON ONLY.
To Request a Copy of a Sealed Case Pursuant to §19.2-392.6:1 or §19.2-392.12
- Requestor is the Defendant or Attorney on behalf of defendant
- Must complete Form CC-1206
- Must provide clear copy of Defendant’s Identification
- Will be reviewed in Chambers
- Copy available within 1-2 business to pick up or be mailed via USPS mail
- Requestor is None of the above
- Must complete Form CC-1206
- Must file a motion to be heard in open court
- Motion can NOT BE SAME Day
- Typically heard once a month
