Prepayment of Tickets

The Fairfax County General District Court has a defined list of charges that can be paid in advance of the court date.  If you wish to waive your right to a trial and pay one of these tickets in advance, you may do so by the following methods.

For all payment methods, the deadline for prepayment is the business day before the date on your ticket.  The court must receive the payment by this date.

Note: By pre-paying your ticket, you are waiving your right to a court hearing and pleading guilty to the charge.

The fastest and easiest way to pay your ticket is paying by credit card online.  Click here for more information on how to do so.  Please note that tickets are not visible on this system until at the earliest the business day after they are written, but it usually takes 3-5 business days.

Per §19.2-353 of the Code of Virginia, all credit card payments include a 4% processing fee. Receipts are generated by the case information system, and sent to an email address if one is provided. If you need a receipt reprinted, you can do so here.

The Fairfax County General District Court accepts Visa and MasterCard.

FAQ

  • What is my due date to pay?
    • You can prepay online up to the business day before your court date. Your court date is written on the summons the officer gave you, and is also listed on the website when you look up your case.
  • I can't find my case in the online system. What should I do?
    • Did you just receive your ticket today? If so, please wait until at least the next business day (we recommend 3 to 5 business days) for your ticket to be entered.
    • Make sure you selected Fairfax County General District Court in the drop-down menu on the left.
    • Your name will match what is entered on your Driver's License. When doing a name search, be sure to enter any hyphenated or multiple last names exactly as they appear on your license.
    • If you still have trouble finding your case, you can call the Clerk's Office to receive your case number(s) and search the system that way. See below for contact information.
  • I found my case, but there is no Mark for Payment button. How do I pay my case?
    • Certain traffic tickets, when written under a County or Town code section, are not pre-payable on our website. We can accept prepayments by phone, mail, or in person for those tickets. See the sections below for more information.
    • Traffic misdemeanors (such as reckless driving), most criminal misdemeanors, and all felonies are not pre-payable. You will need to come to court on the date on your ticket.
    • In some cases, an officer may mistakenly mark the box on your ticket that says you can prepay the case, when it is for a code section that is not prepayable. The marked box does not overrule the list of prepayable cases.  In this situation, you will need to come to court on the court date listed on your ticket.
    • If you are concerned that a case should be payable, please contact the Clerk's Office for more information.
  • Which tickets are prepayable online?
    • If your code section starts with any of the following numbers: 3-; 4.1-; 5-; 9-; 10-; 42-; 46- (NOT 46.2-); 82-; or 83-; then the website will NOT be able to accept your payment. You can still prepay by other methods - see below for more details.
    • All other prepayable code sections can be paid on the website. This includes 46.2- tickets - note the .2!

You can pay any prepayable ticket using our automated phone system. Call us at 703-246-3764, then press 1 to enter the payment system.

Keep the ticket with you - you can enter the ticket number (located at the top left of the ticket) to find your case. The system will ask you for all of the information it needs to accept payment.

Please note that tickets are not visible on this system until at the earliest the business day after they are written, but it usually takes 3-5 business days.

The automated phone system only accepts credit card payments from Visa and MasterCard.  Per §19.2-353 of the Code of Virginia, all credit card payments include a 4% processing fee.

  • What is my due date to pay?
    • You can prepay by phone up to the business day before your court date. Your court date is written on the summons the officer gave you, and is also listed in the Online Case Information System when you look up your case (see above for more details).
      • Please note: The automated system is currently only able to accept payments up to two business days before the court date. Payments made on the business day before your court date must be made by speaking to a clerk.
  • I need my summons number or case number to pay by phone. How do I get that?
    • You can look up your case on the Online Case Information System to find your case number. Please note that if the officer wrote multiple tickets, you will have multiple case numbers, and you will need to pay each of them.
    • Your summons number is written on your ticket. It is located near the top of your ticket. Depending on which sized ticket you received, see these sample tickets for help:
    • You may also speak to a clerk to get this information, and the clerk can send you back to the automatic system to enter that information once you have it.

You are also able to pre-pay tickets by mail or in person. For more information on these methods, please see our main payment page.
