The word “influencer” invokes images of TikTok product reviews and how-to Insta Reels. But a group of local community leaders in the Fairfax Health District are changing the definition of ‘influencer’ as it pertains to public health.

For more than a decade, the Fairfax County Health Department’s outreach team, together with support from its Multicultural Advisory Council, has worked to identify local community leaders who are trusted voices throughout the community. These “Community Champions,” are individuals who consult with the Health Department on local public health needs, partner with the agency to create relevant programs and services, and share public health information with community members.

“People listen to the people they trust. It can be a neighbor, friend, family member, or the person you turn to when you have a need or issue,” said Claudia Morcelo, outreach team supervisor, Fairfax County Health Department. “Community Champions give a voice to public health needs at the most grassroots level, so we can respond and work together to organize needed actions and promote improved health.”

Carla Claure is a Community Champion in the Audubon Estates in Alexandria, and a well-known and respected presence in her community. In addition to working and taking care of her family, she organizes and conducts weekly food donations. Carla supported onsite COVID-19 vaccination clinics by registering 500+ of her neighbors.

“A community champion doesn’t have to be affiliated with an organization. They can be a mom, a laborer, or any other community member. Champions like Carla are the trusted voice in the neighborhood. Through connecting with her, we are able to engage with the rest of the neighborhood to identify needs and improve health,” Claudia said.
