The County conducts periodic assessments of local housing conditions, barriers and impediments. The Office of Human Resources & Equity Programs leads analysis, testing and interagency efforts towards progress on the Metropolitan Washington Regional Fair Housing Plan. The Regional Fair Housing Plan was accepted by the Board of Supervisors in August 2023.

Testing is one method to determine whether a person is treated differently in their search for housing. The OHREP conducts ongoing fair housing testing on emerging fair housing issues and publishes periodic testing reports.
The Analysis of Impediments (AI) to Fair Housing Choice (2016-2020) provided an overview of the fair housing situation in Fairfax County, with findings and recommendations to overcome the effects of identified impediments.
The AI also provides a comprehensive review of a jurisdiction, its laws, regulations, and administrative policies, procedures, and practices and an assessment of how this affects the location, availability, and accessibility of housing. In addition, the document assesses how conditions, both private and public, affect fair housing choice.
