Sugarland Run Bridge at Heather Down Drive Project

Department Resources

On July 8, 2021, The Park Authority Board approved the FY 2021 – FY 2022 Capital Work Plan, which included projects identified for funding from the 2020 Park Bond Program.   The list of funded projects includes the design and permitting for construction of all trail improvements and the construction of steel pedestrian bridge at the former bridge location in a section of Sugarland Run Stream Valley adjacent to Heather Down Drive in the Dranesville and Hunter Mill Districts.  This bridge will replace a bridge that was removed 15 years ago and will reconnect the neighborhood along Heather Down Drive with the Sugarland Run Stream Valley Trail.

Difficult Run 70x10 Bridge 2021

On December 13, 2021, staff requested a proposal from Bowman Consulting for engineering and permitting services to complete the design of a new bridge at the Sugarland Run crossing site. The site plan was submitted to Fairfax County Land Development Services for review on March 31, 2022. A Joint Permit Application was also submitted on March 28, 2022, for coverage under various state and federal permits.

The contract has been awarded and the contractor will be mobilizing on site shortly with construction activities beginning in early March 2023. Active construction is anticipated to be completed by late Summer 2023, weather depending. Residents should expect occasional construction traffic entering and exiting the park access road via Eddyspark Drive and Heather Down Drive. Construction hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. during weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
